Case Study - Wavin Make A Step Change In Health And Safety

Wavin Make A Step Change In Health And Safety

"We are now one year on since the first survey, with improvements being introduced, and without doubt the whole process has increased the Health & Safety awareness across every site. Although there is still a way to go we believe we have made the first steps in changing our culture and on our journey to further reducing accidents within the organisation."

Colin Lomas, Health Safety and Environmental Manager.
Wavin South West Europe

The Client

Wavin is the leading supplier of plastic pipe systems and solutions for the Building, Construction and Utilities markets in Europe.

The Challenge

Over the years, Wavin has made continuous improvements to its health and safety performance through targeted programmes resulting both in a reduction of both lost time accidents and total recordable accidents. However more recently their performance began to plateau, and so they decided they needed a step change in their approach to health and safety management.

The Solution

Wavin looked to the Safety Climate Tool as a starting point in helping them identify employees’ perceptions on health and safety issues. Seven sites in the UK and Ireland took part in the survey through the Safety Climate Tool, involving around 1,200 people.

The Benefits

Wavin could identify several benefits running a safety culture survey using the Safety Climate Tool:

• running the survey through 1,200 people was a key part in raising the profile of health and safety within the organisation

• by actively involving the employees during the consultation process, Waivin gained greater commitment from the workforce towards their health and safety initiatives

identifying opportunities for both local and regional improvements and implementing appropriate actions across the sites by management as well as employees.
