Case Study - United Biscuits Could Demonstrate An Improved Safety Culture

United Biscuits Could Demonstrate An Improved Safety Culture

"The HSL SCT was used to map changes in UB Logistics safety climate over time. This provided both the evidence to prioritise operational areas where improvements and development were required, and a measure for monitoring progress. We’ve moved forward in how we look at safety and this has been reflected in the change in SCT results. "

John Johnstone, Health and Safety Manager
UB Logistics division

The Client

United Biscuit (UB) is a large international food manufacturing organisation.

The Challenge

UB’s logistic division completed a large behavioural safety campaign in Spring 2009 and were interested in exploring how the safety climate and safety performance had changed since their use of the original HSE Climate Survey Tool (CST) in 2003.

The Solution

A safety culture assessment was conducted, working closely with the logistic division. This included: converting the old CST data into the new Safety Climate Tool’s format, running a new staff survey running the SCT, reviewing accident data over three-time periods, and sharing key findings and a set of recommendations.

The Benefits

The project delivered many significant benefits for UB Logistics:

• Understanding the underlying safety culture in the Midlands distribution centre in 2009,

• trending clear improvements of safety climate scores between 2003 and 2009, indicative a more positive safety culture,

• Witnessing a steady decline with the average number of accidents per month reducing from 7.7 (in 2003) to 3.3 (in 2009)

A more open and transparent process to conduct accident investigations at monthly management meetings which are cascaded to employees through safety champions and shared with relevant individuals.
