Case Study - Ford Engaged Their Employees to Produce a Health & Safety Strategy

Ford Engaged Their Employees to Produce a Health & Safety Strategy

"This survey allowed us to get a level of insight and understanding not previously available. In particular, we started to get to know how our people 'feel' about our commitment to safety."

Rob Ardley, Human Resources Manager
Ford Southampton

The Client

Ford Motor Company Limited has been the UK’s biggest-selling car and commercial vehicle brand for 40 and 51 consecutive years respectively.

The Challenge

As a global company, Ford was committed to demonstrating social responsibility and reducing its accident and illness rate. With human factors being a key aspect of modern health and safety management, Ford selected the Safety Climate Tool to best evaluate the safety culture as well as identify priorities and define actions plans.

The Solution

The Safety Climate Tool was used to undertake a comprehensive a safety culture evaluation. A tailored questionnaire for employees was made and distributed, the results were analysed and shared with employees through a series of focus groups, giving them the opportunity to express their views on:

- the underlying factors identified from the questionnaire

- the identification of priorities and action plans to address any safety concerns.

The Benefits

The project has had significant benefits from Ford including:

- understanding the underlying safety culture in their Southampton plan

- Consolidating invaluable insights into potential barriers preventing them from achieving their health and safety objectives.

The most significant impact of the work for Ford has been the involvement of its employees in the development of a targeted and prioritised strategy to address health and safety concerns.

Ford took forward the recommendations made by the outcomes of the SCT survey and expected to see a significant financial return on their investment in the reduction of sickness absence and improved worker well-being.
