Developed by scientists at the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL), the Safety Climate Tool (SCT) enables organisations to measure safety culture, providing robust insight that enables organisations to tangibly improve employee attitudes to safety.
SCT is a simple-to-use online tool that enables you to quickly gauge your organisation’s attitude to health and safety, producing a measure of safety culture. It pinpoints where effective action can be taken to improve safety, providing clear priorities.
Run as a survey, the tool is comprised of 40 statements that explore the attitudes and perceptions of your workforce across a number of key health and safety factors. The tool then provides a score for each factor that acts as an objective baseline measure which can then be used to measure improvement.
When you purchase the Safety Climate Tool, you’ll receive a starter pack that contains a vast array of materials to help you engage employees from across your organisation on the subject of safety. This ranges from posters and desk drop flyers to carefully-worded engagement presentations, e-mail templates and intranet content. In short, a complete toolkit to accompany the main survey.
“The safety culture of an organisation is the product of individual and group values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behaviour that determine the commitment to, and the style and proficiency of, an organisation’s health and safety management.”– Health & Safety Executive
The Safety Climate Tool has been developed by scientists at the Health & Safety Laboratory and is a robust, scientific tool for measuring safety culture within organisations. It measures individual attitudes across the organisation, providing a more meaningful picture of employee attitudes towards health and safety, from which specific and detailed action plans can be developed.
Our Acclaim team has been supporting health and safety professionals for many years, helping organisations to remain compliant across their full workforce – whether they are directly employed or contractors. We are the only provider of the HSL’s Safety Climate Tool worldwide.
The SCT survey is available in 42 languages. By surveying employees in their first language, you can gather a much more detailed picture of safety attitudes. This applies to overseas sites, as well as UK employees who might prefer to respond in a language other than English.
In addition to an overall benchmark, you may wish to determine how your organisation’s health and safety culture compares with other, similar companies. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) can provide sector-specific reports for 17 different industries and special interest groups, so you can assess your results within your peer group.
Safe deal cards are a great tool for engaging your workforce on the topic of health and safety, supporting culture change. The cards help you to structure formal and informal sessions to determine the human factors affecting your organisation.
Over 600 organisations around the world are reaping the benefits of using the Safety Climate Tool. Read more some of the well-known businesses using SCT on the HSE website.
"This survey allowed us to get a level of insight and understanding not previously available. In particular, we started to get to know how our people 'feel' about our commitment to safety."
With human factors being a key aspect of modern health and safety management, Ford selected the Safety Climate Tool to best evaluate the safety culture as well as identify priorities and define actions plans. A questionnaire for employees was made and distributed, the results were analysed and shared with employees through a series of focus groups, giving them the opportunity to express their views on the underlying factors identified from the questionnaire as well as the identification of priorities and action plans to address any safety concerns.
The HSL SCT is a web-based survey and will require a JavaScript-enabled browser such as Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer 8 or later. For viewing the reports, a PDF viewer is required.
